The independent online newsletter for people with apnea and their families, by a person living with apnea.
Introduction
Hi! I'm Jerry Halberstadt, and I am living with sleep apnea. That's why I recognize the need for information and support in order to deal with sleep apnea and its effects. Since 1992 I have worked with medical, dental, and other experts, including people living with sleep apnea, to create Phantom Sleep Resources as well as the handbook, Sleep Apnea--the Phantom of the Night, in order to help people overcome sleep apnea.
Editorial Policy
Final editorial judgment will be in the hands of the editor (Jerry Halberstadt) and the New Technology Publishing (NTP) newsletter advisory board. The board will include respected names in sleep medicine and the sleep industry, as well as patients and their spouses or partners.
I have worked with many experts and sponsors and consider a basic responsibility to them, as well as to my readers, to be even-handed and accurate, and to base what is published on the best clinical and scientific information available. My criterion is that the person living with sleep apnea has the right to all relevant information to support making lifestyle and clinical decisions by working closely with appropriate healthcare professionals.—Jerry Halberstadt

BiPAP
I've had my machine about 2 months now. I started with the nasal pillows, now I have the tube. I change the water in my humidifier every other day. I'm a basket case over this. I don't know why I can't get used to it. I dread going to bed at night and getting up early for work. I'm so exhausted all the time. My apnea is caused by my nose and throat, not being overweight. So I'll probably have to use it the rest of my life, unless I get the operations. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Finding help for apnea treatment
There are many reasons that people have problems with the PAP treatment. Most of the problems are actually trivial to solve! You don't give enough detail to understand exactly what is the problem. In any case, you will need to get advice from your sleep treatment providers. Get on the phone to them and explain exactly what is the problem and keep on it until you can find a solution. It may help you to read the book, Sleep Apnea--the Phantom of the Night, which includes many of the typical problems and workarounds. Having this information can help you work with the medical people. Last I checked, the "operations" don't work for many people, so don't rush to that direction, and get information and advice from sleep specialists who are trained in ALL aspects of sleep medicine.

sleep apnea
Where do I start? I have this problem and what type of doctor do I need. and is there a general treatment for my condition. Thanks, Jim
Finding help for apnea treatment
Jim,
Still the best comprehensive source on sleep apnea is Sleep Apnea--the Phantom of the Night. It describes the condition, reviews treatments, and will help guide you on finding treatment. The most common treatment involves using a device during sleep to flow air into the nose to prevent the apnea. Your primary care doctor should be able to help you find an accredited sleep lab to diagnose and prescribe treatment.
Too Late
I wish I would have known about this book a year ago. My ex husband died on Christmas Day last year due to sleep apnea. He developed heart disease from not getting the help he needed for the apnea. He refused to see that he had the problem, which lead to our divorce and now his devasting death, which has been so hard on our 4 daughters. Doctors need to warn people with sleep apnea of the seriousness of this issue!
pillows
Hello,
Do you have any suggestions for pillows? I just brought home my new CPAP machine. I'm a stomach sleeper so this will be difficult for me. I also purchased a wedge pillow with hopes that I will be able to sleep on my side or back at night. It is quite firm so I'm not sure if this will work for me. Any other suggestions?
