Stevenson says: We need to attend to hopelessness, injustice, and poverty, we must not separate them from our lives. We must have the courage to accept that our humanity depends on that of everyone else. We need dignity and justice. Who we are as a society is defined by how we treat the weak, the poor. The moral arc of the universe is long but it tends towards justice.
That is what he means by the right kind of identity, the pursuit of justice for all. It means accepting the pain of empathy and being strong.
